This short article explains why strategic planning is important, and some of
the purposes of generating a strategic plan. Strategic planning has the
following purposes. All purposes must be addressed to receive maximum
benefit.
- To provide an ongoing
dynamic framework for action in both the short term and long term, upon which
decisions can be made about what is done and not done.
- To create a shared
understanding for all employees regarding the reason the organization exists,
what it is trying to achieve, and how it goes about achieving it.
- To provide a basis for the
allocation of tasks to both smaller work units and individuals in the
organization through the performance management system.
- To provide an opportunity
to assess the organization’s past and present, and it’s successes in order to
inform the future.
- To identify resources
(both human and material) that will be required for future success, and to
budget and plan for their procurement.
