Conflict prevention and constructive interaction are the responsibilities of everyone in a work group. However, those in formal authority can contribute due to their temporary or permanent leadership roles. If staff have difficulties communicating with each other, or with excessive conflict, it is likely that the formal leader of that group has the same difficulties. Find out how this happens. Formal leaders, whether they do so intentionally or not, influence behaviour in the workplace. They set the tone for the organization. If the manager gossips and uses back-channel communication, staff will be more likely to do so. If the manager communicates and behaves with integrity, and principles, and models the behaviours he or she desires in the workplace, those behaviours are more likely to become the norm for groups. |
