Toxic Organizations Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Monday, 22 May 2006
We can think of organizations as falling on a continuum. One end is anchored by organizations that function well. In the middle we find the average organization that is effective but could be better. Finally, we have the toxic organization, an organization that is largely ineffective, but is also destructive to its employees and leaders.

Managing The Maverick Employee Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
The maverick is usually challenging the way things are done, always looking for different ways to get things done, though sometimes these different ways aren't an improvement. Hard to manage, the maverick seems relatively oblivious to the normal constraints of organizational control, authority of his boss, or even rewards.

Dealing With Human Speed Bumps! Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
Many work groups and teams have at least one of these bumps in the organization, and they attempt to function just like those speed bumps in mall parking lots; encouraging others to slow down. In the worst cases the human speed bump seems to stall the entire organization, and  can be relied upon to puncture any enthusiasm others may have about changes in the organization.

The Effects of Change On The Manager Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
One of the least mentioned effects of change relates to how it affects the manager leading that change, and his or her ability to undertake the leadership role.  We have already talked about the effects of change on the individual employee, and of course managers are subject to the same reactions, resistances and strains.  Some types of change, such as restructuring, or downsizing can put considerable strain on the leaders of an organization.

Managers - Are You Getting The Information You Need To Do A Good Job?! Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
You can't be everywhere and you can't know everything, but not getting the bad news you need when you need it is a very major problem. You look foolish, ignorant, "out of it", regardless of who might be at fault for the lack of communication. Not a great way to enhance a developing career particularly if your boss is also embarrassed. In other practical terms, that which you know nothing about cannot be addressed, and timeliness is important. Sometimes late is just as bad as never!

Bullying & Manipulation At Work Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
Bullying is probably not the best word to describe self-centered behavior. That's because we associate bullying with a very aggressive stance where a sense of threat is involved - like the "schoolyard bully". If we use the word bullying, we may miss other, more "tricky" behavior that is less "in your face", but is as damaging or more damaging.

The Responsive Manager/Leader Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
The Responsiveness Paradigm outlined elsewhere in this newsletter is applicable at a number of levels. For example, it applies to organizations in general, and the ability of the organization to respond to the needs of customers, staff and other stakeholders (eg. politicians, etc). It applies to non-supervisory staff, and their ability to respond to the needs of their managers, customers and co-workers. This month we are going to look at responsiveness as it applied to managers, leaders and/or supervisors.

Winning Management - Learning From Olympic Athletes Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
During the Olympics millions watched athletes challenge themselves and each other.  We  saw Canadians and, indeed, Manitobans show that they can be "world class", both in athletic skills and professionalism.  Not only did we get a chance to see sports performances but we also got a glimpse, through interviews and spotlight pieces, of the means that these athletes use to reach their best performances.

Winning Organizations - Applying What We Know About Sports and Athletics Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
The winning organization requires that every member have a clear idea of what the organization is trying to achieve, but more than that members of the organization must see that vision in very vivid concrete terms.  This is because the function of the visioned results is to energize people to strive for higher performance in their own domains, and this energizing will only work when employees see the connection between their own needs and the dreams of the organization.

Improving Communication -- Tips For Managers Print E-mail
Written by Robert Bacal
Wednesday, 10 March 2004
Research indicates that managers spend somewhere between 50% - 80% of their total time communicating in one way or the other.  This isn't surprising, since communication is so critical to everything that goes on in an organization.  Without effective communication there can be little or no performance management, innovation, understanding of clients, coordination of effort, AND, without effective communication it is difficult to manage the expectations of those who are in a position to make decisions about your fate.
